Logging in and passwords
You will have been sent or given a login. Usually you are given a once-only password at first, which you have to change so that only you know it. Click on Sign In (top right) and follow the instructions. Video clip – how to log in.
Click on ‘Forgotten your password?’ If you remember your username and the system has the correct email address for you, you can reset your password yourself. Otherwise, the button below lets you send a message to your local PatientView admin so they can re-set your login for you.
If you attempt to log in with the wrong details too many times you will be locked out. You can reset your password and unlock as in ‘Forgotten login’ just above this paragraph, by sending yourself an email, or if that won’t work, by sending a message to your local Admin.
Seeing test results
Click on Results. To see more about one test, click on it. You will see a table and a graph. Or you can click on the red button at the top ‘Table View’. Video clip – show test result.

This isn’t doing much yet, but in it we could show things like
- Results of X-rays and scans
- ECG recordings
- Echocardiography results
- Endoscopy results
- Pathology results
Entering your own results
- Click on Enter Your Own Results at the top right.
- Choose which result group you want to enter. The usual one is BP, weight, pulse, glucose. You don’t have to put all of these in, just the ones you want to.
- Set the date (and time if relevant) to the time the test was done
- I entered some results wrongly! See FAQs below.
What do the abbreviations mean?
Blood pressure abbreviations: BPsys (systolic blood pressure) is the top number when you take your blood pressure, and BPdia (diastolic blood pressure) is the bottom number. It is measured in millimetres of Mercury (mmHg – Hg is the abbreviation for mercury) from the days when blood pressure machines contained a tube filled with mercury.
Gluc: Gluc is short for glucose, meaning the number that you get on the screen when you do a pinprick test to measure blood sugar. This is measured in mmol/l (millimoles per litre). More about glucose testing.
Adding or editing a diagnosis yourself
Many, probably most people have more than one diagnosis – but usually PatientView receives just one from your unit (sometimes none!) From September 2016 some people can add additional diagnoses themselves. This adds relevant information links (mostly from the excellent NHS Choices or the US Medline Plus sites). This is available to
- Some pilot renal centres are offering this from September 2016
- Centres offering ‘Generic PatientView’.
If you click on the Add/Remove Diagnosis button, you can EITHER start typing on the left, or choose the type of condition, then the exact condition, on the right.
In your Settings you can alter the email address we contact you at (please check it), and add a mobile phone number. This is just for PatientView though, note that neither of these are returned to your unit. Tell them too if they should be in your record there.
Add or change your photo
You can also add or change your photo here. This is available for both patients and staff. It is added to the top bar (in place of a silhouette next to your name), and to Messages. This should help to remind people who they’re communicating with, and it generally make the place seem more personal and pretty.
Generate an API key
An API key is for advanced users who wish to retrieve their PatientView data programmatically. For example, to integrate their results with data from other systems or to visualise their records in different ways.
Click the ‘Generate API Key’ button to generate a time-limited API Key for use in your integrations. Then, to connect to the PatientView server you will need to use your login credentials along with your API Key. Details on how to retrieve your results via the API are here under ‘Patient API Documentation’.
Here is a short video about sending messages. It’s quite like sending emails. You choose a centre (probably you only have a choice of 1) and a recipient. These are secure messages – more secure than ordinary email. But units vary in how much they’re using them, so far.
My results haven’t arrived yet
Almost always this is a problem at your local unit rather than at PatientView central. In each location, results are sent from a local system on to PatientView. If they haven’t got to the local computer system they won’t get to PatientView. So if delays are much longer than expected, contact your local unit first.
Data last received – what does this mean?
It says data received, but I can’t see anything new. Unfortunately some units send data to us repeatedly that doesn’t have any changes in it, so it looks as if your record has been updated, but it hasn’t. To get round this, you can set up an alert so that it will show you straight away whether there is any new info in your record. Video clip on setting up an alert.
I’m not getting an answer from my local unit

I keep getting locked out
Some people are finding this happens particularly on tablet devices, possibly when the machine remembers – an old password. Try deleting the remembered one and re-entering. Use the Forgotten login method if you’re stuck.
I’m moving (or) I’m attending more than one unit
You can join in the new unit and your results from both units will be combined. You can be joined up from as many places as you need. At the new unit, contact the PatientView admin – they may ask you to sign a form again, but as you’re signed up somewhere else that isn’t always thought necessary (more info for Admins).
I entered some results incorrectly
At present we have to delete those manually, you can’t alter them once submitted. Please contact PatientView Central. Go to Contact – Send a message – choose ‘central PatientView support’. Explain exactly which entries you need to delete.
